Tsipras: Left-Right distinction remains dominant political differentiation in Europe

The distinction between Left and Right remains the dominant political differentiation in Europe, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Thursday, according to government sources, addressing a preparatory meeting of the Party of European Socialists (PES) in Brussels.

Tsipras said his view is confirmed by the election results in the United Kingdom, adding that “the defeat of the extreme-right in France and the rest of Europe is the most important message.” The same sources said he noted that “those who are counting on the continuing hegemony of the neoliberal Right are wrong, because it [the Right] constitutes the cause of the birth and not the defeat of anti-Europeanism.”

He also stressed the need for progressive forces to make their mark in the debate on the new architecture of Europe, adding that strong commitments and actions are needed to strengthen Europe’s social dimension.
