Fire Brigade: Samos forest fire partially under control

A forest fire that burned through the night on the island of Samos was partially under control, the fire brigade reported on Sunday.

The fire broke out on Saturday evening in Mesokampos, Samos and tourists staying at hotels on the Glykoriza and Proteas beaches, as well as residents of Mesokampos, had been evacuated as a precaution and taken to the Pythagorio indoor stadium in boats and buses.

A force of 31 fire fighters and 13 fire engines, assisted by a 38-person team on foot and volunteers, remain on the scene to fully extinguish the fire.

Four aircraft and two fire-fighting helicopters had also participated in the operation to put out the fire on Saturday until nightfall.

In statements to the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA), fire brigade sources explained that the fire had two fronts, one of which was heading toward the mountain and the forest and the second with a direction toward Glykoriza beach.
