Five deaths in Greece from West Nile virus

Greek health authorities have recorded five deaths and 47 cases of the West Nile virus (WNV) infection in the country since the beginning of the year, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KEELPNO) said on Wednesday.

The center said the deaths concerned people aged over 70. Among those who became ill, in 28 cases the virus affected the patients’ central nervous system while 19 experienced lighter symptoms (fever).

The WNV cases were recorded in the regions of Argolida, Arcadia, Achaia, Rethymno, Elia and Corithia.
