The head of the Athens forensic service, Nikos Karakoukis, described on Wednesday the situation with the victims of the Athens fires as being unprecedented.
He said that most of the victims from the fires either died from burns or drowned in the sea in their attempt to escape the blaze. Medical experts have described the process of identifying the bodies in the aftermath of the fires in eastern Attica as difficult and will rely on DNA techniques.
“The procedures regarding the forensic investigations have progressed fairly well. There are about 62 bodies. We believe that by Saturday we will have finished,” he said.
