Germany is aware of its historic responsibility to fight racism, the German Ambassador to Greece Jens Ploetner told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) on Monday, commenting on the entry of the AfD (Alternative for Germany) party in parliament following the general elections on Sunday, adding that German citizens will stand up against any attempts to promote its divisive ideology.
“Germany is aware of its historic responsibility to fight racism and sectarianism wherever they occur. I am sure that the overwhelming majority of Germans will stand up against any attempt to propagate right-wing nationalist ideology,” he said.
Asked about the direction the new government will take once it is formed, the ambassador expressed certainty it will follow a pro-European agenda.
“The vast majority of Germans voted in favour of parties who believe in Europe. I am therefore quite sure that the next government will pursue a decisively pro-European agenda,” he said.
