Government deliberately overtaxed the middle class, says ND’s Staikouras

Main opposition New Democracy (ND) shadow economy minister Christos Staikouras on Tuesday said the government had made a deliberate choice to “overtax the middle classes”. He said that the figures released by the Independent Authority of Public Revenues reveal an increasingly painful reality, in which one in two citizens are unable to pay their taxes, arrears to the state have reached 100 billion euros and one million citizens are facing foreclosures.

“All these are the result of the government’s deliberate choice to overtax the middle class as its economic staff has cynically admitted. The government’s choice is to make the poor poorer and more numerous, undermining all hope for recovery,” said Staikouras, adding that “the prime minister of taxes is entirely responsible for this dead-end policy”.
