Gov’t sources: EU sends clear message to Turkey to improve relations with Greece

The European Union’s message to Turkey that it needs to improve its relations with Greece and Cyprus was clearly stated for the first time, government sources said late on Monday, commenting on the EU-Turkey Leaders’ Meeting in Varna.

“It’s the first time that the EU is sending a clear message to Turkey that EU-Turkey relations cannot progress unless there is progress in its relations with Greece and Cyprus,” the sources said.

They added that European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker and European Council President Donald Tusk spent 20 minutes discussing with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the issue of the two detained Greek border patrol officers and calling for their immediate release, although there was no commitment on the Turkish side on the issue.
