Greece-FYROM agreement is ‘historic’, German Deputy FM Michael Roth says

German Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Roth on Monday described the agreement between Greece and FYROM as “historic” and noted that even deep bilateral differences can be overcome, provided that there is trust and political will.

In an announcement ahead of the Western Balkans Conference under the Berlin Process, Roth stressed that “stability and democratic development in Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, FYROM, Montenegro, Kosovo and Serbia are in the interests of Germany and Europe and are of great importance for our security.”

He also said that a forthcoming meeting of foreign ministers of the Western Balkans in London is an important opportunity for the countries of the region to improve regional co-operation and thus support the process of bringing these countries closer to the European Union. The announcement noted that the German government supports the actions of the Regional Youth Cooperation Office (RYCO), which was set up under the Berlin Process and stressed that “the initiative is about reconciliation of upcoming generations in an area where the wounds of the war continue to have a strong presence.”
