Greece prepares for heavy snowfall, low temperatures starting Saturday

The public should limit their activities outside of homes and always carry snow chains in their cars on national highways, Citizen Protection Minister Michalis Chryssohoidis said on Thursday, following a meeting at Civil Protection headquarters on Kifissias Avenue ahead of heavy snow expected this weekend.

Chryssohoidis said a decision is pending on whether vaccinations will be postponed and whether heavy trucks will be allowed on national higways.

“According to meteorologists, we are expecting snow, very low temperatures and heavy frost – a particularly powerful phenomenon,” he said. “This is why we held a national meeting with all Greek regions and related agencies and services here in the General Secretariat of Civil Protection,” he noted, to prepare. The “Medea” weather front is expected to last to the middle of the coming week.

“We beg you not to circulate, or to reduce your movements to the minimum over the coming days. Whoever is obliged to circulate, bring snow chains with you. For heaven’s sake, do not use the emergency lane, because this could create problems,” he stressed.
