Greek Bar Associations call on minister to scrap provision abolishing legal confidentiality

The Plenary of Greek Bar Associations called on Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis on Wednesday to immediately recall a provision in a finance ministry bill which abolishes the legal professional privilege.

“The proposed provision, which is completely vague in content, and completely abolishes all professional confidentiality, overlooks the particular nature of legal confidentiality and is contrary to fundamental principles of the Constitution but also to European and Union law,” the president of the association, Vassileios Alexandris, said in a letter to the minister.

The draft bill with the provision was submitted to parliament on May 26 and concerns the adoption of a 2015 EU directive.
