Greek retail sales volume up in August

Greek retail sales volume rose 0.8 pct in August this year compared with the same period in 2018, Hellenic Statistical Authority said on Thursday. The statistics service, in a monthly report attributed this development to sales increases in bookstores (11.6 pct), furniture-home equipment (5.6 pct), supermarkets (4.6 pct) and pharmaceutical-cosmetics (0.3 pct). On the other hand, sales fell in food/tobacco/alcohol (9.6 pct), department stores (5.3 pct), clothing-footwear (3.2 pct) and fuel (0.6 pct).

The general retail sales volume index (turnover in fixed prices) rose 0.8 pct in August on a year-on-year basis, but rose 2.1pct from July 2019. The seasonally-adjusted index rose 1.3 pct in August from July 2019. The general sales turnover index (turnover in current prices) rose 1.2 pct in August from August 2018 and rose 1.7 pct from July 2019. The seasonally-adjusted index rose 1.6 pct in August from July 2019.
