Greek soldiers charged only with illegal entry in military zone, says Turkish official

The two Greek soldiers who were detained in Turkey after accidently straying into its territory last week during a patrol are charged with illegal entry in a military zone, Turkey’s Deputy Prime Minister Bekir Bozdag, the government’s main spokesman, told a news conference on Monday.

Bozdag said that after a request by the prosecutor, the Edirne court decided to detain them on the charge of illegal entry into a forbidden military zone.

He also said there is no question of exchanging these soldiers with the eight Turkish servicemen who have requested asylum in Greece after the neighbouring country’s failed coup in 2016, because Turkey “is right” on the issue and Greece has “obligations to fulfill” under the bilateral agreements between the two countries.
