Greek stocks ended significantly lower on Tuesday

Greek stocks ended significantly lower in the Athens Stock Exchange on Tuesday, pushing the general index of the market below the 750-point level reflecting losses in bank shares.

The index fell 1.77 pct to end at 748.44 points, after rising as much as 0.60 pct early in the session. The Large Cap index dropped 2.24 pct and the Mid Cap index ended 0.59 pct lower. Turnover was a low 46.820 million euros, in volume of 51,583,827 shares.

PPC (4.76 pct), Fourlis (3.58 pc) and Aegean Airlines (1.90 pct) scored big gains among blue chip stocks, while Alpha Bank (7.10 pct), Eurobank (6.67 pct), Piraeus Bank (6.25 pct) and National Bank (5.69 pct) suffered heavy losses. Among market sectors, Utilities (1.92 pct) and Technology (1.79 pct) scored big gains, while Banks (6.52 pct) and Personal Products (2.47 pct) suffered losses. National Bank and Eurobank were the most heavily traded securities of the day. Broadly, decliners led advancers by 65 to 35 with another 26 issues unchanged. G.E. Dimitriou (14.29 pct), Motodynamic (9.57 pct) and Flexopack (6.52 pct) were top gainers, while Logismos (23.78 pct), Varvaress (19.35 pct) and Spyrou Farm (15.44 pct) were top losers.

The November contract on the FTSE/ASE Large Cap index was trading at a discount of 0.17 pct in the Athens Derivatives Exchange on Tuesday. Volume on the Big Cap index totaled 1,317 contracts with 4,657 open positions in the market. Volume in futures contracts on equities totaled 67,591 contracts with investment interest focusing on National Bank’s contracts (38,426), followed by Alpha Bank (9,434), Piraeus Bank (3,757), Eurobank (10,665), MIG (1,255), OTE (479), PPC (1,185), ADMIE (157), Titan (186), Viohalco (201), Mytilineos (281), Hellenic Petroleum (188), GEK Terna (174), Ellaktor (476), Jumbo (121), Cenergy (225).

Greek bond market closing report

The yield spread between the 10-year Greek and German benchmark bonds rose slightly to 4.80 pct in the domestic electronic secondary bond market on Tuesday, from 4.79 pct on Monday, with the Greek bond yielding 5.13 pct and the German Bund yielding 0.33 pct. There was no turnover in the market.

In interbank markets, interest rates were mixed. The 12-month rate rose to -0.190 pct from -0.191 pct, the nine-month rate rose to -0.220 pct from -0.221 pct, the six-month rate was -0.275 pct, the three-month rate was -0.329 pct from -0.341 pct and the one-month rate was -0.372 pct.
