Greek stocks ended strongly higher in the Athens Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Market sentiment was encouraged by news of a successful completion of a bond swap scheme and expectations that Greek authorities and its creditors were nearing a staff level agreement in the next few days. Buying activity focused on bank shares.
The general index of the market jumped 1.67 pct to end at 738.31 points, off the day’s highs of 742.64 points. The Large Cap index rose 1.70 pct and the Mid Cap index ended 0.31 pct higher. Turnover was an improved 72.786 million euros in volume of 85,824,698 shares.
Attica Bank (11.11 pct), Eurobank (10.74 pct), Piraeus Bank (8.65 pct) and National Bank (7.29 pct) scored big gains among blue chip stocks, while Sarantis (3.27 pct), ADMIE (3.24 pct) and Jumbo (1.60 pct) suffered heavy losses. Among market sectors, Banks (6.50 pct), Commerce (4.89 pct) and Financial Services (2.48 pct) scored big gains, while Personal Products (1.38 pct) and Health (1.28 pct) suffered losses. National Bank and Eurobank were the most heavily traded securities of the day. Broadly, advancers led decliners by 61 to 47 with another 23 issues unchanged. Mouzakis (24 pct), Motodynamic (17.75 pct) and Kiriakoulis (17.01 pct) were top gainers, while Dionic (19.79 pct), Alpha Astika (18.88 pct) and G.E.Dimitriou (16.67 pct) were top losers.

The December contract on the FTSE/ASE Large Cap index was trading at a discount of 0.29 pct in the Athens Derivatives Exchange on Wednesday. Volume on the Large Cap index totaled 2,600 contracts with 6,658 open positions in the market. Volume in futures contracts on equities totaled 109,297 contracts with investment interest focusing on National Bank’s contracts (58,954), followed by Alpha Bank (9,812), Piraeus Bank (8,358), Eurobank (18,284), MIG (9,458), OTE (591), PPC (1,073), ADMIE (474), Hellenic Exchanges (193), Viohalco (114), Mytilineos (556), Ellaktor (441), Jumbo (142), Folli Follie (178), Cenergy (124).
