Greek stocks rise sharply on Wednesday, boosted by climate in bond market

Greek stocks made strong gains in the Athens Stock Exchange on Wednesday, boosted by the improved investment climate in the bond market, with the general index of the market flirting with the 750-point level. Selling activity focused on selected blue chip stocks such as PPC, ADMIE and Attica Bank. The general index surged 1.59 pct to end at 749.76 points, after rising as much as 0.86 pct early in the session.

The Large Cap index gained 1.69 pct and the Mid Cap index rose 1.32 pct. Turnover was at 83.8 million euros in volume of 57.7 million shares.

Piraeus Bank (4.17 pct) and GEK Terna (3.57 pct) scored big gains among blue chip stocks, while Motor Oil (-1.97 pct) and Fourlis (-1.88 pct) suffered heavy losses. Among market sectors, Banks (3.17 pct) and Telecoms (3.01 pct) scored big gains while Health (-1.70 pct) and Oil (-1.00 pct) suffered losses.
National Bank and Eurobank were the most heavily traded securities of the day. Broadly, advancers led decliners by 70 to 32 with another 141 issues unchanged. Mathios (28.45 pct), Kekrops (21.57 pct) and Centric (10.17 pct) were top gainers, while Logismos (-11.11 pct), Eltrak (-9.57 pct) and Papoutsanis (-8.82 pct) were top losers.
