GSEE denounces ‘state of lawlessness’ in labour market

The General Confederation of Employees of Greece (GSEE), Greece’s largest umbrella trade union organisation representing private and public-sector workers, on Tuesday urged the government to intervene and end “a state of lawlessness” prevailing in Greece’s labour market, in which workers found themselves at the mercy of ruthless and immoral employers.

According to the trade union, illegal or even criminal practices in the labour market were constantly rising, with the Labour Inspection Corps currently investigating two flagrant instances that acted to confirm GSEE’s claims.

In one recently reported case, an employer had hired ex-cons to strongarm employees into handing over a part of their earnings to the company after withdrawing their salary from an ATM. Another report concerned a case where employees were given coupons in lieu of salary.
