Hellenic Navy to conduct formal inquiry into incident with Turkish merchant vessel off Lesvos

The Hellenic Navy will conduct a formal administrative inquiry into an incident involving a Turkish merchant vessel southeast of Lesvos island early on Friday.

The Turkish-flagged “Karmate” entered Greece’s territorial waters and after nudging the Greek navy’s gunboat “Armatolos” continued to the Turkish coast, ignoring radio calls to stop. The navy said there were no casualties, serious damage or leaked fuel.

Later in the day, Reuters reported that the Turkish Ministry of Transport stated, “We have received information that there is no threat of sinkage, death, casualties or environmental pollution.”
