Iliopoulos: Political change needed immediately

“The government has put its signature to the current wave of price hikes,” main opposition SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance spokesperson Nassos Iliopoulos said, speaking late Wednesay to the interchannel programme +NEWS.

“It is notable that 65 percent of those asked in a Prorata poll said that government’s choices are responsible for the high prices,” Iliopoulos said, underlining that “the Greek economy has not yet faced the serious repercussions of the Russian invasion of Ukraine”.

He repeated his party’s demand for an increase of the minimum wage to 800 euros, the reduction of the special tax on fuel and natural gas and the taxation of windfall profits in the energy market.

Estimating that the current government “can’t and does not want to implement a policy in the interests of the social majority,” he stressed that what is needed, immediately, is “political change,” adding that this is the issue at stake at the SYRIZA Congress, which kicks off on Thursday.
