Interior Minister Panos Skourletis will be leaving the cabinet to become secretary of SYRIZA pending approval by the party’s Central Committee, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras said on Monday.
In his address at a party meeting, Tsipras thanked current secretary Panos Rigas for his “irreplaceable contribution” in the last three years, and said he proposes that the Central Committee elect Panos Skourletis as its next head.
“At the dawn of a new era” following Greece’s completion of its fiscal adjustment programs, Tsipras said, “our party needs another push forward, yet another example of selflessness and loaylty.” Tsipras is also expected to announce a cabinet reshuffle within the week.
Skourletis has successively served as minister of labor, and environment and energy, before assuming the Interior Ministry’s portfolio. With the resignation of Alternate Minister for Citizen Protection Nikos Toskas this month following the deadly fires in Mati and nearby areas, he also assumed the Citizen Protection portfolio.
