Iraqi asylum seeker arrested in Athens on terrorism charges

A 34-year-old Iraqi who was arrested on Monday afternoon on charges of being a member of terrorist group ISIS had been living in Greece since 2018, police sources said.

The man had arrived in Greece with his wife and their four children. An application for asylum was rejected, and an appeal was also rejected.

He then applied to administrative courts to be granted asylum for humanitarian reasons. This case is pending.

Meanwhile, police sources said, Greek authorities were informed that the man is being sought as an ISIS member, a charge substantiated by video, where he has been identified as armed and active in terrorist events since 2014.
