Justice minister to propose stricter penalties for drunk driving, hit-and-runs

The justice ministry will present legislation imposing more severe penalties for fatal road accidents caused by drunk driving and for hit-and-run accidents, Minister Stavros Kontonis said in a meeting with the mothers of road accident victims on Tuesday.

In the case of drunk driving, Kontonis said the penalties will include removing a person’s driving’s license for a large period of time or imposing a lifelong driving ban if the same driver causes a similar accident.

For hit-and-run accidents, the ministry will propose increasing the existing penalties and Kontonis said he is in talks with other ministries to review the administrative fines imposed by the Traffic Code.
