Independent Greeks (ANEL) leader and National Defence Minister Panos Kammenos rejected the resignation of ANEL Vice President Panagiotis Sgouridis over statements the latter made in an interview earlier on Friday.
Sgouridis said on Friday afternoon, “Following a reply to an imaginary scenario, and in order to avoid creating problems to the government and Panos Kammenos, I submitted my resignation as vice president of ANEL at the disposal of ANEL’s president.” ANEL is the junior member of the ruling coalition with SYRIZA.
Greek media reported that during a radio interview on Friday morning Sgouridis implied the ratification of the Prespes Agreement with FYROM, expected to be submitted to Greek parliament early in 2019, may be delayed by a possible military incident at the Aegean Sea. In a tweet earlier, Kammenos himself appeared to refer to the statement when he said that “theories about so-called hot incidents are groundless and do not serve Greece.”
Kammenos has not accepted the resignation.
