Labor Minister Vroutsis chairs meeting on outstanding widows’ pensions

Labor & Social Affairs Minister Yiannis Vroutsis directed insurance officials to immediately issue guidelines for staff to clear a backlog of tens of thousands of widows’ pensions, at an extraordinary meeting held on Monday.

The meeting he chaird included Deputy Minister Notis Mitarakis, the head of the unified social insurance fund EFKA and other key officials.

According to a statement by the ministry, “despite the promises of the previous ministry leaders that widows’ pensions would be paid out on July 1, services were not adequately prepared to pay them out immediately, nor had any preparatory work been done or directives been issued on how to do so.”

It added that “inactivity, negligence, lack of coordination and confusion over responsibilities” stalled the processing of “over 150,000 outstanding widows’ pensions.”
