A large wildfire which is developing in two fronts in a field in the area of Santomeri, western Achaia, as of Monday afternoon is threatening the village of Arla, the fire brigade said.
A large firefighting force is trying to stop the flames from reaching the first houses, the regional governor of Western Greece Apostolos Katsifaras told the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA). He said strong winds are blowing in the area reaching 6 on the Beaufort scale.
At the second front, firefighters on the ground and three firefighting aircraft are operating in Eleohori and Tzailo to protect the nearby communities. Policemen have cordoned off the streets around the two fronts to facilitate the movement for the firefighting vehicles and water tankers.
