Lavrio camp can continue operating but not under ministry, says Balafas

The Lavrio camp could continue to exist and house migrants, but under the responsibility of another state agency rather than the ministry, Deputy Migration Policy Minister Yiannis Balafas said in an in an interview with the public broadcaster ERT on Wednesday.

The specific camp has been in operation for several years, he said, but has not been constructed along the lines of those built the last two years. He noted it houses mostly Kurdish political refugees.

European funding programmes however do not provide for such centers, which are not controlled by the state and “do not contain facilities or follow the regulations of international laws,” he explained, adding that the center may continue to operate “but not under the migration ministry’s responsibility: perhaps under the responsibility of other state agencies.”
