Local authority employees to hold five-hour strike on Thursday

The POE-OTA union federation representing local authority employees on Tuesday announced a five-hour nationwide strike next Thursday, between the hours of 7:00 and noon. The union also announced plans for a rally outside its headquarters on Karaiskaki Square at 9:00 on Thursday, followed by a march to the interior ministry.

The strike is held in response to the government announcement for the obligatory admission of children into kindergartens at age four. The measure, according to POE-OTA, will spell the end of municipal daycare centres, leading thousands to lose their jobs and thousands of parents to despair.

Currently, 40 pct of children enrolled in nurseries and 80 pct of children in municipal daycare centres are in this age group.
