A car parked in an open-air parking lot in Glyfada, at 128 Vouliagmenis Avenue, exploded with a powerful blast at 10:10 on Friday, injuring one man and setting fire to four vehicles.
Residues of an explosive device have been found at the scene by investigating officers and member of the police bomb squad, police souces said. According to the same sources, the luxury car with Australian licence plates belongs to a 56-year-old Lebanese man with Australian nationality, who was injured in the blast. The explosion is thought to have occurred when he got into the driver’s seat and started the engine.
The injured man was picked up by an ambulance and rushed to Voula’s Asklipio hospital, where he underwent surgery and is considered to be in a serious condition. Twelve fire men and four fire engines responded to the incident, quickly placing the blaze under control, while Vouliagmenis Avenue remained closed in both directions for several hours.
