A man who died after jumping off the “Blue Star Naxos” ferry for unknown reasons on Tuesday night was identified by the security police as a man with a record.
The man fell from about 20 metres four nautical miles northwest of Syros and was dead when he was pulled out of the water by the coast guard.
The ship was headed to Amorgos island with stops at several islands and he had boarded the ship at Piraeus, apparently travelling alone.
Police used fingerprints and DNA to identify him, and are expected to formally announce the results later on Thursday.
Ship officials did not find personal belongings on board, nor has he been sought by anyone. Police found the name of a person who did not check in at boarding, but could not verify the name was real.
