Manhunt launched to recapture prisoners that escaped police custody in Piraeus port

Police and the coast guard on Wednesday launched a joint operation in the Piraeus region to locate and recapture two prisoners that escaped custody in Piraeus port, while they were being loaded onto a ferry.

The two prisoners were part of a group of 11 Albanian inmates that were to board the ship “Eleftherios Venizelos” docked in the port. While they were being taken out of the police van in order to board the ship, four made a run for it and attempted to escape.

One of the four was almost immediately intercepted by a coast guard officer and arrested in the port, while a second was found near the port a short while later by a DIAS police detail.

A manhunt has been launched to find the remaining two prisoners that are still at large.
