Environment and Energy Minister Giorgos Stathakis, in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency (ANA) on Friday, predicted that many companies will express an interest in acquiring Public Power Corporation (PPC) lignite units.
He added that developments will lead to the creation of two to three competitive alternatives to PPC, but the public corporation will remain a strong pillar of the country’s energy system.
Stathakis reiterated commitments to secure jobs, as well as the concession of exclusively lignite units, and not hydroelectric power plants. He also responded to the opposition’s accusations regarding the process and described the future of lignite in the context of the country’s international obligations to restrict greenhouse gases but also with regard to its energy security.
The full interview is available in Greek on the ANA’s website.
