Marathon meeting on the impact of the refugee flows and migration on Lesvos decides to speed up the asylum request procedure

A marathon 7-hour meeting on the impact of the refugee flows and migration on Lesvos concluded on Friday night, chaired by Minister of State for Coordinating Government Operations Alekos Flambouraris.

According to Flambouraris’ office, following an extensive exchange of views on how to manage the situation, participants – which included the island’s mayor and MPs – agreed to the following:

1. The need to decongest Lesvos

2. Improve living conditions at the open refugee centers and the closed pre-deportation centers

3. Speed up the asylum request procedure

4. Allow the operation of NGOs only after securing a permission from the Alternate Minister for Migration
Policy, Yiannis Mouzalas and the consent of the North Aegean prefecture and the municipality of Lesvos

5. Pay three-months of recorded compensations to Moria

6. Take specific measures to relief islanders and deal with economic and social impact

7. Continue and enhance monitoring of refugee flows from the coast of Turkey
