Medical association calls for action plan against West Nile virus

The Medical Association of Athens issued a stark warning on Thursday against the rising number of cases of the West Nile virus, saying that it has developed into a major health threat with serious consequences for the economy and tourism.

The issue was discussed earlier at a meeting of its board members, who attributed the problem to a failure on behalf of the state to protect the country.

The association decided to seek the advice of specialised experts on deciding what actions need to be taken next, particularly in city areas, where more cases are expected to be reported.

The medical group called on the Health Ministry to announce whether studies have been completed on mosquito populations in city districts and to publish this information in order for these areas to better protect themselves against the virus.
