Migrants and refugees arriving at Aegean Islands in first half of March totalled 625

A total of 625 migrants and refugees arrived at the northern Aegean Islands in the first two weeks of March.

Of these, 395 arrived on the island of Lesvos and 232 on Samos. No migrant or refugee arrival was reported on Chios, which indicates that the Turkish coast guard has focused its efforts of in the region of Izmir, to prevent Turkish political refugees from crossing to Chios island.

According to the Turkish Coast Guard’s official site, refugees and migrants were intercepted in 17 incidents in March, mostly in the sea region betwen Chios and Turkey. In these, 628 persons were prevented from reaching the Greek coast.
