Migration Min. Vitsas: “I keep an open communications channel with my Turkish counterpart”

“I keep an open communications channel with my Turkish counterpart as well as with EU Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos,” Minister for Migration Policy Dimitris Vitsas said on Wednesday in an interview at Real FM, regarding the increase in refugee and migrants arrivals.

“The problem is that they have elections in Turkey,” he said, adding that some officials turn a blind eye to those trying to cross the borders into Greece. “We are making an effort to solve the issue by giving them as much information as possible. This situation cannot continue – the agreement, the joint statements are at risk,” he said.

He foresaw that the refugee and migration issue will continue to concern the world in the future. He also said that arrivals have risen since March 25, tripling compared to last year and have doubling compared to January and February this year.
