Minister promises arrests of gang stealing hospital equipment ‘within days’

The recent thefts of expensive medical equipment from state hospitals in Athens and other areas of Greece was the work of an organised crime ring whose members will be arrested in “a matter of days,” Alternate Health Minister Pavlos Polakis said on Monday.

The minister said the crime ring operated by breaking into clinics and public hospitals and stealing specific types of medical equipment that was widely used to examine patients on a daily basis.

“The ministry, in collaboration with hospital governors, has ensured that patient appointments at the affected hospitals will continue unhindered but with heightened security measures using existing security personnel in the rest of the country’s public hospitals,” Polakis said.

The ministry was also working closely with the citizen protection ministry and the investigation was now at an advanced stage, with the arrest of the gang members expected in a matter of days, the minister added.
