Minister reiterates Greece will not extradite ‘Turkey’s 8’; says asylum should be decided by court

Alternate Defence Minister Dimitris Vitsas reiterated on Tuesday the government’s commitment to respect the Supreme Court’s ruling not to extradite eight Turkish officers who fled to Greece after the failed coup last year, saying the issue on whether to grant asylum should also be decided by a court.

“Greece is not a country that harbours coup plotters and it has been made clear that the eight Turkish officers will not be extradited,” he told radio station “Alpha 9.89”.

“We believe that the case, beyond the jurisdictional competence of these two committees, must now go through the judicial system,” he said, adding that asylum seekers have often resorted to an administrative appeals court after their application was rejected by the committees.
