Minister tables amendment designed to relieve prison overcrowding

Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis on Tuesday tabled an amendment in Parliament that redefines the rules for the conditional release of detainees from prison on parole or probation, in order to alleviate overcrowding in Greek prisons.

The new provisions aim to prevent overcrowding and ensure conditions that allow the proper functioning of the prison system, as well as respect of international standards for human rights.

It also contains provisions, however, that bar those serving time for more serious criminal offences from benefiting from the new, more lenient rules for conditional release, such as those incarcerated for crimes considered particularly heinous or that pose a heightened risk to law and order and the safety of society.

In other cases, in addition to imposing conditions of release, there is the option of imposing house arrest with electronic surveillance.
