Minor clashes between protestors, police at Thessaloniki regional conference

There were minor incidents during rallies organised in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki on Wednesday for the 11th Regional Conference on Reconstruction of Production in Central Macedonia, where Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras delivered the closing address.

Groups of protestors attempted to approach the hotel where the conference was taking place but were repelled by police forces deployed in the area.

Trade unionists, farmers, local government staff and others had gathered in Demokratia Square and organised a march but found their way barred by police vans about 300 metres from the hotel. Tension ensued and police responded with tear gas to disperse demonstrators when some of them tried to get past the barrier, while protestors replied by throwing stones.

A second attempt by a different protesting group to approach the venue was also repelled.
