Main opposition New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis will hold talks on transferring the ENFIA property tax to municipalities with the Greek municipalities’ union KEDE this week, ND spokesperson Maria Spyraki said on Monday.
Talking to the television station ‘E’, Spyraki said that ND had already drawn up a first draught of the plan, which would used the independent authority of public revenues as a collection mechanism, and dividing up the sums via a “balancing mechanism” so that municipalities will receive the same amount as they get now, through state subsidies and other sources.
She stressed that municipalities would not lose out, noting that there would be a form of ‘solidarity’ from richer to poorer local authorities, but that there would be greater accountability over how the money collected in taxes was used.
“Citizens know the mayor, they don’t know the minister. They will know, therefore, exactly where their money is going,” she added.
