New Democracy leader Mitsotakis writes letter to EU’s Hahn regarding Greek minority property in Albania

New Democracy leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis criticized Albania’s decision to turn over to its Ministry of Tourism Himara property belonging to members of the Greek national minority, in a letter sent on Wednesday to EU Commissioner for European Neighbourhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations Johannes Hahn.

“This is a direct violation of the Greek minority’s human rights,” Mitsotakis said, adding that the decision is at a variance with the European Convention of Human Rights.”

He also expressed his concern over the often provocative initiatives of Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, which, as he said “are not conducive to the betterment of Albania’s EU prospects and do not promote good neighbourly relations.”

Mitsotakis called on the European Commission to take immediate action to overturn the Albanian government’s decision and urged for the properties in question to be returned to their lawful owners in the Greek minority.
