NATO’s Secretary-General Stoltenberg urges FYROM to show realism on name issue

NATO’s Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg urged the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (FYROM) to show realism on the name dispute with Greece, during a visit to Skopje.

Speaking at a special session of the country’s parliament on Wednesday, Stoltenberg hailed FYROM’s efforts to reform but added that the name issue has to be resolved in order to be admitted to NATO.

“But while it is good to be ambitious, it is also important to be realistic,” he reportedly told lawmakers adding that the doors to the North-Atlantic alliance remain open.

Stoltenberg is holding a series of meetings with FYROM officials, such as President Gjorge Ivanov and Foreign Minister Nikola Dimitrov, and is expected to meet Prime Minister Zoran Zaev later today and hold a joint press conference.
