New Democracy (ND) called on the government and the management of power utility PPC on Monday to immediately launch an investigation into the collapse of a lignite mine in Amyntaio and the subsequent landslide which led to the evacuation of a nearby village.
“The government and the management of PPC must investigate immediately the real causes of the disaster, with transparency, without any attempts for a cover-up and provide a final solution to the problem of the residents of Anargyroi,” the party’s shadow energy minister Kostas Krekas said during a visit to Amyntaio.
PPC said the collapse began on Saturday morning and was much larger than anticipated, with about 80 million cubic meters of soil having been displaced. The inhabitants of Anargyroi, the village near the mine, were evacuated on Sunday.
Skrekas also urged the government to support the displaced residents and PPC employees.
