ND leader Mitsotakis: Tourism sector a victim of overtaxation

New Democracy (ND) leader Kyriakos Mitsotakis promised that his party will re-examine the overnight-stay tax on hotels when it becomes government, while addressing a Greek Tourism Confederation (SETE) assembly on Thursday.

He noted that there have been significant improvements in Greek tourism’s performance in the last three years, adding that this was mainly due to a favourable geopolitical climate and people’s actions, with only a small part due to government interventions.

Mitsotakis said that tourism was a victim of overtaxation and the lack of a long-term growth plan. He said that the current fiscal policy mix is wrong because it overtaxes productive forces in the country, punishes reliable tax payers and generates excessive surpluses that are redistributed to further clientelist aims.
