ND’s Koumoutsakos: The government risks missing an opportunity to solve FYROM issue

The government made a big mistake in ignoring the domestic front with respect to the FYROM name issue and the opportunity that arose in the foreign dimension of the problem is at risk of being lost, along with the window of opportunity for its solution, main opposition New Democracy (ND) shadow foreign minister Giorgos Koumoutsakos said on Wednesday. Koumoutsakos made the statement in an interview with the Athens-Macedonian News Agency’s radio station Praktoreio 104.9 FM.

“It is an issue that touches the soul, the dignity, the heart of all the Greeks. You cannot have a successful negotiation if the domestic front is split and fragmented,” he underlined.

As for ND’s position on the name of FYROM, he stated: “We were negotiating on the basis of a compound name, with a geographical qualifier, that will apply for everyone, with a change of Constitution, with the abolition of all expressions of irredentism.”
