New amendment toughens administrative penalties against unlicensed TV stations

State Minister Nikos Pappas submitted an amendment in a draft bill tabled in parliament on Friday which toughens penal and administrative penalties against TV stations that did not win a license in the recent tender and continue to broadcast their program.

According to the amendments, the unlicensed TV channels will have to stop broadcasting within five days of the publication of the names of the final winners in the government gazette. The amendment also allows for a six-month period to television stations that won a license to start broadcasting in high definition.

TV stations that fail to comply will face a minimum of a one-year jail sentence and a fine of at least 20,000 euros, instead of a six-month jail sentence and 3,000 euros in fine until now.
