The draft of the new penal code was put up for public consultation on Monday by Justice Minister Stavros Kontonis.
The law contains provisions on better jail management, social reintegration of prisoners, and the protection of prisoners’ legal and human rights.
Among other things, the ministry said, it promotes equality and transparency and enforces staff accountability.
In its 88 articles, the law changes the incarceration procedures, specifies housing, health care, education, labor and external communication conditions, sets out regulations on leaves of absence, and includes provisions related to security, protection, discipline, transfers and supervision of jails.
The draft was prepared by a special committee that included two professors and was presided over by appeals court prosecutor Panagiotis Brakoumatsos. The ministry of justice was responsible for processing the draft before it was made public.
