New Turkish extradition request does not change status of eight servicemen, appeals prosecutor says

Eight Turkish servicemen do not have to remain in custody over a third warrant for extradition from Turkey, but must continue to be held while their application for asylum is being examined, appeals prosecutor Georgios Voulgaris said on Monday.

Turkey is accusing them of participating in the July 2016 coup. The criminal court of Istanbul is requesting the eight for trial over eight charges, including sedition, participation in an armed terrorist organisation and defection to a foreign country.

The eight servicemen had fled to Alexandroupoli in northern Greece after the failed coup. They are currently held in the Olympic while their asylum applications are being examined.
