Newly-appointed migration min attends his first EU Council meeting under new portfolio

Newly-appointed Migration Minister Dimitris Vitsas attended the Justice and Home Affairs Council meeting in Brussels on Thursday, with Yiannis Mouzalas, who held the portfolio before him.

The EU Council ministers discussed the state of migration and said farewell to Mouzalas. Bulgarian Interior Minister Valentin Radev – whose country holds the rotating presidency in the EU – and EU Migration, Home Affairs and Citizenship Commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos hailed Mouzalas’ contribution to managing the migration crisis and in seeking solutions, and said the country’s image changed because of those efforts the last three years.

Vitsas and Mouzalas met with their counterparts from Belgium, Holland, and Switzerland and with Humanitarian Aid & Crisis Management Commissioner Christos Stylianides.

Prior to assuming the migration portfolio, Vitsas was alternate defence minister.
