Clashes erupted between some 40 people in the center of Thessaloniki on Thursday in what may have been a battle for control of street corners among sellers of contraband cigarrettes, police and eye witnesses said.
One person was taken to hospital as a result of the clashes, which involved foreign nationals of Pakistani background, police said. Seven people were detained from the incident that took place near the Kapani market.
In Greece’s larger cities, it is common to find people peddling illegal tobacco products on street corners. A similiar incident took place at the same point in Thessaloniki last week.
