The 76-year-old driver of a car that hit and killed two refugees and injured a 12-year-old girl outside the refugee center in Oreokastro, northern Greece, is being treated for minor injuries at the hospital of Thessaloniki, guarded by police.
The driver has been charged with two counts of manslaughter and for causing dangerous bodily harm. The 32-year-old woman and her 9-year-old son were killed instantly on Sunday evening, while the 12-year-old was injured but is not in danger, police said.
The incident sparked fresh protests outside the camp with migrants and refugees clashing with police and setting fire to the driver’s car. They also caused damages to the ambulance that came for the victims, a police car and a private vehicle.
Police has also launched an investigation into the clashes that followed the accident, during which two rescuers and two policemen were injured.
